Bidding does not mean paying

In a choice-based lettings system, a “bid” normally means expressing interest in an advertised social home. It is not a financial auction. You usually need an accepted housing application before you can bid.

Read each advert

Check bedroom size, age restrictions, accessibility, location, landlord, rent, service charges and any local-letting criteria. A property can be unsuitable even if the website technically lets you express interest.

Shortlisting

When a cycle closes, the landlord or allocations service normally ranks eligible bidders under the allocation scheme. Being first when you click does not normally make you first in the queue. Verification may take place before an offer is made.

If you are unsuccessful

Continue bidding where appropriate and keep your housing application current. Some services publish anonymised previous-let information that can help applicants understand demand, but historic results cannot predict when a suitable home will appear.
