Different types of housing

Sheltered, extra-care, supported and specialist housing are not interchangeable. Some provide an independent tenancy with an alarm or scheme manager; others include structured support or care. Eligibility and funding can differ significantly.

Assessment and referrals

Access may involve the council, social services, health services, a housing register, the landlord or a specialist referral route. Some schemes accept direct applications while others require an assessment.

Costs and support

Ask separately about rent, service charges, support charges and care costs. Housing-cost support does not necessarily cover every service or care charge.
